What Is Vaping?

As an adult smoker looking to switch from cigarettes to a smoke-free alternative, you may have heard of vaping. You might be wondering what is a vape, or what does vaping mean?

Essentially, a vape, also known as an e-cigarette, is a device that contains e-liquid. E-liquid usually consists of flavourings and nicotine and produces vapour instead of smoke.

How Does Vaping Typically Work?

There are different types of vapes, however they usually work in the same way. Once the device is turned on, the vapourisation process begins, and the component responsible for this is the atomizer. In most cases, the atomizer is made up of a wick and coil. Once activated, the wick absorbs e-liquid which is then heated and vapourised by the coil.

You might find it helpful to know the different types of vaping devices available. Understanding how types of vapes work can help you decide whether or not they fit what you’re looking for.

What Are the Different Types of Vapes?

There are plenty of different vaping devices to choose from - and what suits one adult smoker might not suit another. There are several types of vapes to look into.

Disposable Vapes

These vapes are typically discarded after use. Once the battery or e-liquid runs out, it’s usually time to replace the device. Disposables can be an option for adult smokers who want a low-cost way to see if vaping is right for them. Disposable vapes are available in both refillable and non-refillable options. Some disposables can be refilled with e-liquid, and may come with a slightly longer lifespan than typical single-use disposable vapes. However, it’s worth checking manufacturer’s information for accurate details about a vape’s longevity.

Non-Disposable Vapes

Some adult smokers might be searching for a non-disposable alternative. These vapes come in different sizes, shapes, and formats- and are usually rechargeable.

- Cigalikes, one of the first types of vapes, are designed to replicate the look and feel of a cigarette

- Vape Pens - one of the most common vape types. They are often more modern in their design compared to Cigalikes.

- Vape Mods - the word “mod” comes from the word “modify”. A mod typically allows the vaper to alter their vaping experience. However, we don’t recommend device modification or alterations to a device, other than those intended by the manufacturer. Modification may cause device complications and faults.

- Pod systems – these are a relatively new type of vape. Designed with either an open or closed pod format, they’re typically made up of two components: a pod filled with e-liquid, and a battery. Connect the two and you have a pod system vape.

No matter the type of device, adult smokers switching to vaping will likely have a different experience from smoking.

What’s Typically Inside a Vape?

We’ve covered the atomizer, which contains the wick and coil. The atomizer is a crucial feature in most vape devices. You might not know that there are also different types of coils, each of which have a different impact on your vaping experience.

You might have heard of ‘vape tank’, which is often used when referring to the atomizer. The terms ‘vape tank’ and ‘atomizer’ are used interchangeably and describe differences between their models. Both vape tanks and atomizers have the same purpose - vapourising e-liquid.

Of course, the atomizer and its components aren’t the only parts of a vape. The battery powers up a vape device, and taking good care of it will likely increase a device’s longevity. Device care is also important for safety reasons- you should always refer to manufacturer’s instructions in this regard.

Another key part of a vape is it’s e-liquid. E-liquids often come in different consistencies depending on factors like their PG / VG ratio combination. In many e-liquids, the ratio of Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerine will likely impact the vaping experience.
